tinnitus

how can you stand in this room and not hear
the ceramic shattering? i hear it in my sleep, see
a cup fall out of the corner of my eye but i will
never be fast enough to keep it whole. i try
every time. i squeeze my eyes shut and try to go
back to sleep try to go back to sleep. everyone
shares pictures of broken breakables and i
double tap endlessly. someone is walking
through mountains of fragments on another
continent. conversations are difficult to have
over all the noise. i admit i often give up. a man
wants me to vote blue. my door has an orange
city sticker on it that says notice to tenant:
i close the door and sit in my room,
waiting.
