A Good Himalayan Morning

A poem by Nitin Das Rai

On a terrace
a man sips a cup of
Darjeeling tea
beside the
wide-toothed yawn
of his cat.

A yellow light bulb
flickers in a window below
and shafts of slanting light
cut through curtains.
A dawn sprouts:
a breaking,
breathing morn
in the Himalayas.
Monsoon dampness
clings to the air,
but the warmth is
strong like a yak.
A breeze wafts
in and out of
ajar doors, and
windows let in scents of
wisteria climbers
and bougainvilleas.
The white light grows
in whiteness.

The man sips steadily,
fingers and palms
wrapped around
his mug.
On a plate on a table,
biscuits grow
soft and crumpled
and the cat leaps
to sniff the
biscuits.

"Come here cat,
come home,"
the man says.
The cat,
slinks away.
The man sips his tea
And looks at
the mountains.
He gazes at the
snow-capped peaks,
he stares and he stares,

and then lights a cigarette.
