Poems: "I Know I Will Die in Early Night" and "The
Ocean"
I KNOW I WILL DIE IN EARLY NIGHT
I know I will die in early night.
A half a rainbow between South Bath
and Monmouth Beach
swirling me home.
Moon blasted colors.
Will my son feel a shiver?
Will my daughter see the moon
pregnant? And all the skies
begin to close,
to draw the curtains
and swallow all the light,
a light heading for Pennsylvania,
Ohio, and dipping
into Monterey
and the Pacific rim.
THE OCEAN
The ocean is cobalt,
purple blue. Perhaps
the flow of seasons speaks.
Sandpipers have taken over the beach
as of mid-August,
landing to eat the summer away,
their legs too long
for their small bodies
as they scuttle
to eat the smallest things
the waves offer.
Music everywhere here,
falling from the skies,
breathing in and out
from the ocean
day and night.
