NEWSPAPER PHOTOS OF THE BROKEN WORLD
A poem by Donna Munro
Newspaper Photos of the Broken World*
Color photographs of the broken world in smoke and
flames
blue bus ripped apart, colorful bodies, flowers in a
wasteland
red car crushed by concrete slabs, bright yellow
flames
against black smoke
rescuers, healers, horrified maddened mourning and
curious gather
gather, gather
roses at a wedding
a pond’s green algae interrupted by golden eyes
Beauty is a separate animal
she is war as well as love
she is broken as well as whole
he leans against a shattered wall
and weeps at the beauty of the dead child
Here is hope alive and well
in a blue boat drifting away
from the littered shore, flames like amazed flowers
How can it be that I am?
How can it be that I’m drifting
into the current and where does it go
and where does it go
and where at last does it go?
