Fred Levin, a trial lawyer in Pensacola, Fla., who previously supported Florida Sen. Bob Graham and Edwards, expects to raise at least $100,000 for Kerry.
Kerry could approach a $1 million day in Florida by hitting several cities — perhaps holding a breakfast in Pensacola, luncheon in Jacksonville and cocktail party in Tampa, for example, Levin said.
"I think he's going to have a heck of a lot easier time getting money than votes down here," Levin said. "The money people I think will be there. Now, coming down and getting the votes, that I don't know."
Background on Fredric G. Levin, who essentially pays my salary:
GAINESVILLE --- A gift from prominent trial lawyer Fredric G. Levin to the University of Florida College of Law will result in a $20 million endowment, immediately transforming the college into one of the best-funded public law schools in the nation. The gift, the second-largest ever to a public U.S. law school, will be formally announced by UF officials Monday (1/11/99) at a luncheon in Levin's hometown of Pensacola.
Mr. Levin states he is most proud of his idea in 1993 of rewriting the Florida Medicaid Third Party Recovery Act to permit the State of Florida to sue the Tobacco Industry to recover expenditures for treating illnesses caused by cigarette smoking. Mr. Levin wrote the legislation, and was instrumental in its passage. Immediately after its passage, the legislation was described as "the single biggest blow against the tobacco industry in United States history." The legislation eventually resulted in a $13 billion dollar settlement for the State of Florida.
Mr. Levin received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in 1958, and graduated number three in his law school class from the University of Florida in 1961.
