The Shack

I loved this worthless home
in tea bag gray, windows
sealed by duct tape peeling off the glass.
In came moonlight, white and strong
like muscles of some Pegasus.
I wondered if our moneyed ways
had been eclipses all along.
Butterflies, their vigilance
in amber flags, would come and go
through gaps in screens.
My only art, a 3-inch fern
from clearance racks, a pile of books
poverty would wander through.
Curtains were a patchwork slab
from backs of housecoats
scissored and then sewn again.
Walls were thin as parasols.
Pass the hour with a page
as eager men run fingers down
a backless dress.
The goal was in the naked space.
Wild fennel, aging wood,
signs of crumbled gingerbread.
A 12-inch fan could
multiply the shade from trees.
Fireflies mated in the dark.
I mistook the roof for stars.
