Real Mom Speaketh the Truth
about "Spawnlings"
by Denise Rissell
Are you tired of the same old syrupy stories about mothers and their children?
Real Mom, who affectionately refers to her three small daughters as "spawnlings"which means "deviant creatures sent here from a yet unknown universe to play with her little world"offers a refreshing alternative.
As a syndicated columnist/cartoonist, this 43-year-old mother brings a unique perspective on the role of motherhood through hilarious satirical stories and poorly illustrated stick-figure cartoons. Moms around the world are singing her praises, noting that "someone finally had the guts to tell the truth about motherhood" and others experiencing loss of bladder control because they were laughing so hard while reading her tirades.
Real Mom notes, "All the columns are based on factual events...unfortunately."
When questioned as to why she started writing, she replies, "I felt a personal failure because I could not make a cemetery-inspired snack with cut-out sugar cookies in the shape of tombstones, with coconut-colored green for grass, to take to my preschooler's Halloween party." She also details negative results when employing the child care expert's advice and discipline techniques. When pressed for examples, she retells a story of her spawnling's hero worship of the "Bug Man," and of a "Tea" party she attended where the spawnlings served her a very unusual liquid.
And what about the future of Real Mom?
Real Mom started writing the columns and stick-figure cartoons as a form of
personal therapy and is now embarking on an outreach mission to share
her maternal experiences with the world. One mom wrote her to say, "You
make me feel like I'm not a crappy mom." If her stories can "touch" just
one mom a day…gee, by the end of a year that would be 365 less "crappy
feeling" moms…and the world would definitely be a happier place to live.
